Dawki is a popular tourist spot in Shillong. With a fine crystal water lake situated beside Bangladesh. Umngot is the cleanest river in India. Many people also call this river the Dawki river, which is situated approx 75 km from Shillong Meghalaya.
Shillong tourism provides buses to visit the place along with a few other places. Let’s start our journey with our experience.
On a fine morning, we had our breakfast and start our journey towards Dawki. First, we visited Canyon Rngain Valley also called Mawjngih Lapynshongdor’s viewpoint. This viewpoint is situated at East Khasi Hills. We can view the whole Khasi valley from here. We have spent 10-15 minutes here.
Sylhet Border
Then we started our journey for the Sylhet border. This border separates India and Bangladesh in the Indian state of Meghalaya. This area is a restricted area. The militaries are roaming all the time at this place. They allow the tourists to stay at their specific area of country land and do not allow crossing the border without required documents. One difficult condition we faced, it took 2-3 hours to reach the place as that was Friday when we visited the place and Friday was the holiday in Bangladesh. After reaching the site we had a great time and a tasty pickle we had tried. That pickle was its specialty which had been brought from Bangladesh.
Dawki River in Meghalaya
The most awaited visiting spot we had visited next. Dawki Lake is popular for its location and beautiful crystal water. Dawki lake is located in West Jaintia Hills district in Meghalaya. It seems like a water area surrounded by hills. It situated in the border crossing area on Dawki-Tamabil. The river called Umngot creates this lake. We had a boat from the road crossing towards the border. This boat floated us to an edge of the river where it came from the Jaintia Hills. People can take a bath with the cold steams coming from the hills. We had spent some time here and clicked some memories. We got a chance to do the fishing here. Unfortunately, due to the shortage of time, we missed it. Anyway, overall we had great fun there.
Boating Rates & Availability
Boating charges for four persons are Rs. 500/- to Rs. 800/- depends on the season. Many boats are available there. Everyone should have a life jacket that is provided by the boating authority in Dawki. The boats can be shared by more than one family, then charges would be divided as per the rates.
Then we went to Mawlynnong to visit the Living Root Bridge and the Clean Village.
